2025 International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP)

In December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) and 21 March each year as the World Day for Glaciers, starting in 2025. The IYGP also marks the start of the ‘Decade of Action for Cryospheric Science 2025-2034’, recently adopted by the United Nations to address the urgency of understanding, monitoring and mitigating the melting of the cryosphere in the face of the climate crisis.

The IYGP is co-chaired by UNESCO and the World Meteorologial Organization (WMO). IACS is partner organization. IACS president Liss Andreassen and WGMS director Michael Zemp are members of the IYGP Advisory Board. IACS, together with UNESCO and WMO, will mark the IYGP with a special session at BACO2025. IYGP will be launched on 21 January 2025 and World Glacier Day will be celebrated for the first time on 21 March 2025.

IACS is also contributing to a special issue of the Annals of Glaciology with the theme ‘Vanishing Glaciers’ in 2025.
